A very brave newcomer.
The only grey squirrel in the yard, that has been taken over by black squirrels.
Black and grey squirrels are the same species
and can interbreed. A mutation in the gene that governs coat pigmentation is
responsible for the black colouring.
The testosterone-fuelled black squirrels
are faster, fitter, fiercely territorial and more aggressive, beating greys to
food and mates.
His name...Stoney Braveheart
Good luck Stoney!

They look cute in your photos, but I still don't like them. They're destructive and they're just furry rats!
ReplyDeletePeace,
Muff
I love squirrels, and they certainly keep the whippets entertained :) Lovely pictures!
ReplyDeleteOkay, as a homeowner, I understand them to be a nuisance, but there is still something lovable about them, as your photos demonstrate.
ReplyDeleteYou can just sense that he's up to something, the way he runs on the fence...Wish we had squirrels close by but not too many to be seen here
ReplyDeleteAww, I love his name and wish him happy foraging and harmony with the other squirrels! I wish we had more black ones down here; the grays are EVERYWHERE! Still find them charming, even as they eat my pansies and gobble up the birdseed I've scattered for the ground-feeding birds.
ReplyDeleteThese are great squirrel pics...they are fun to watch but they give us trouble in our attic
ReplyDeleteWe don't have squirrels, so I can only see their charm. Thank you. I hope he finds some territory to call his own.
ReplyDeleteYa, they can be destructive, as can the rabbits who eat my veggie garden, the skunks that dig up my lawn, or the racoons that knock over and eat out of the garbage cans. But none are as destructive as humans who are systematically destroying wildlife habitats.
ReplyDeleteI would be at a complete loss if I didn't see(sub)urban wildlife on a regular basis.
Hi Muff,
My daughter had 8 rats(domestic),as pets during her teen years...so I don't mind them. We don't see many "wild" rats around here.
Hi zd,
Merfy the Morkie loves to chase them!
Hi Judy,
I think they are just adorable. You can squirrel proof your home. We have dozens of squirrels in the yard, never had one in the house.
Hi Anne,
He's a squirrel on a mission!
Hi Ms.CP,
I have squirrel feeders placed in the yard, and they still raid the bird feeders!
Hi Kim,
Wouldn't want them in my attic!
Hi EC,
He hasn't been back, I think the black squirrels ran him off.
Thanks for dropping in.
Cheers
